Smart Veritas Supports Mocean Offshore on Large-Scale Cable Assessment in South East Asia

Smart Veritas collaborated with Mocean Offshore to deliver a large-scale cable Ultimate Limit State (ULS) and Fatigue Limit State (FLS) assessment for an offshore wind farm in South East Asia, supporting the client in planning remedial actions ahead of upcoming maintenance campaigns.

The project required a full farm assessment of inter-array and export cable integrity under both current and predicted scour conditions. With seabed conditions across the wind farm varying significantly, a detailed understanding of cable exposure and free span development was critical to informing the client's maintenance strategy.

Our engineering team worked alongside Mocean Offshore to deliver:

  • ULS assessment of cable free spans under current scour profiles, evaluating static and dynamic loading against allowable limits
  • FLS assessment covering fatigue life estimation for exposed cable sections subject to vortex-induced vibration and wave-induced loading
  • Extreme scour profile analysis using predicted long-term scour development to assess future cable integrity under worst-case conditions
  • Full farm coverage across all cable routes, accounting for site-specific bathymetry, soil conditions, and scour variability

The assessment considered both surveyed current scour profiles and predicted extreme scour scenarios. By modelling the full range of exposure conditions across the wind farm, the analysis identified critical locations where cable integrity may be compromised without intervention. This dual-profile approach provided the client with a clear picture of both the present state of cable protection and the anticipated evolution of seabed conditions over the remaining field life.

A project of this scale, covering hundreds of individual cable spans across an entire wind farm under multiple scour scenarios and environmental conditions, would be impractical to deliver using conventional analysis workflows. FlexDeck, our distributed OrcaFlex simulation platform, was central to making the full farm assessment feasible. By automating model generation, batch-processing simulations across a distributed compute cluster, and standardising post-processing, FlexDeck allowed us to run the volume of ULS and FLS cases required without compromising on engineering rigour or project timeline.

The results were used directly by the client to prioritise remedial actions for the upcoming maintenance campaigns. By identifying the most critical free spans and ranking them by severity, the assessment enabled targeted and cost-effective intervention planning rather than a blanket remediation approach.

This project is a strong example of the collaborative engineering approach Smart Veritas brings to complex offshore challenges.
